Balancing Act
On the emotional roller coaster of paradigm shiftsThis issue keeps me on my toes with Yahweh. It keeps me praying and seeking his word. I feel like I get spurts of energy from the now real possibility of finding another woman to date and God-willing, bring into my family. That is a profound thought living inside someone that was a stout monogamy only proponent from my youth. I grew up in a culture where it was so ingrained and natural that you really never even questioned it. I do think that most of us grew up in that type of culture.
I'm telling you now we were deceived if we believed those teaching found a true biblical foundation and call ourselves people of faith. The bible most definitely allows for a man to marry and provide / be husband to multiple women. When you really start to dig into the details and see it a radical shift can occur in the way you process things. You can't just flip a switch like that and not expect some sort of transposition of emotion and drive to occur in men that adequately way the outcomes and rewards of this. This would almost automatically create a backlash when the truth starts to come out and be applied by men of faith.
So, for our generation, I don't think the issue is the ultimate moral approval of polygyny, but that we live in a culture that has demonized it, and made it something forbidden. This is going to create a real whiplash of anger and passion when men (of faith) start to realize the truth. The trick is going to be to channel all of that anger into a type of productivity that is an acceptable application of faith, and if that serves the end-goal of getting and accomplishing more then so be it. Faith was a bridge between a broken world (no matter when or where) and a Holy God. Am I to judge my circumstance in faith if I am honestly valuing others over myself and fulfilling my biblical duties? I only partially do it to get more, and I will gladly receive and manage and exalt in more if it is given to me, with no shame and honestly open before my creator. The main reason I do it is because I feel compelled to make a difference in my life and the lives of my children. Their futures are at stake. I think there will be many men who will go after this with faith and a type of unyielding courage that many men might not have. I would encourage us to understand that much of the struggle has been made inevitable by the extremity of the prejudices against people that do and would choose to live in polygynous relationships.
With this in mind, I think we must be careful to allow the freedom for men so inclined and driven in faith and purpose of love applied to live their faith and apply Gods standards as they understand them. I consider, as thinkers, we sometimes tend to over-universalize and incline ourselves towards utopian thought that would work great in a kingdom with far more spiritually intuitive laws and practices, but not so well in the real world. Statistics and literal needs unmet tell the real story.
Every generation struggles with different tools, morally with different socially shifting standards, and ultimately with a different movement of the Spirit (towards the ultimate outcome of full Revelation of Christ and his dominion on earth). Eventually the confusion will fade, and we want to be found loving the fullness of the bride of Christ. We must not condemn in any way that which is biblically blessed. Polygyny allows for monogyny and allows both to be good, but morally required monogyny is a distortion of the fullness of the revelation of scripture and therefore the false judge in the unacceptable social and religious condemnation of polygyny.
I could go on and on about keeping things in order, but ultimately being submissive to Christ in all things is the way to go. I have an incredible and real record of self control, goodness, and gentleness, because I feel now even more bound to him, my faith got me into this, I cant wait to see what its going to do next. I do it because God understands me, and approves of me, and provides a way for me to apply my faith. I do it because he is an awesome King and his Law is altogether good. To whom else would I go?
