A Foundations Issue
Commendable vs Condemnable1 - I Am Compelled to Push for Truth.
The pressure, anxiety, and stress that believing in morally commendable polygyny has brought on my marriage is considerable and intimidating. I know there are many people that think it is a good thing that this is such, as they believe polygyny is morally condemn-able. To those people I tell that I have prayed (if possible) to have this burden removed, and yet day after day, I find myself brooding on his law, he precepts, and his intended ways. His law is altogether perfect and his ways are just. There is a beautiful balance and understanding in Yahwah's ways, and I truly believe that when we as his people follow them, we will find blessings, dignity, and honor.
I often contemplate how "wrecked" I feel by all of this. What I mean is, socially speaking, personally speaking, this has been a massive adjustment for me. Its hard having the idol of moral monogamy ripped away. It is even harder living with a woman you still love (even more) and yet be honest about what the bible teaches. It is even harder to be honest with yourself as a man about what you want. All of this difficulty has not been without incredible literal and psychological struggle, and yet deeply relied on Yahweh and his Word all the way through. If I felt or had biblical reason to believe I was wrong, I would repent and follow Him as he led, but my intellect has found its conclusions and my faith has allowed me to move forward. Yet, I know there will be many people (women) mad at me for even creating this blog. I hope those women can understand that as a man accountable before God, I must stand for the truth in spite of their feelings.
I can't imagine dealing with this from a woman's perspective, but I will say this. As much as I desire to be special to God (and believe me, I do), I must be cognizant of the fact that he uses many men, in many different ways, and I am ultimately his to do with as he wills. I am also not without having to deal with feelings of jealousy, as I think those are common in a generally broken world. In spite of these strong feelings, can we not agree that it is of utmost importance to not let feelings create eisegesis interpretations of scripture.
2 - Logical Necessity
Patriarchy necessitates the approval of polygyny, and as believers in the scriptures we have a moral necessity to make sure that biblical truth reigns. If the battle of familial headship is lost to an egalitarian approach, I fear the fight for a healthy culture will be lost. Practically, it is far less about the literal practice of keeping multiple wives at once, but more about the necessity to be sure that the modern Christian church doesn't high-jack biblical truth and twist it to its outcomes to meet their constituents itching ears.
Patriarchy is reduced to 'Dual Headship' without the practical possibility of multiple wives to one husband. Patriarchy can be modeled in a mongynous relationship, but it is fundamentally undermined in a monogyny only doctrine. Therefore, the proper monogynous modeling depends on the morally commendable possibility of the polygynous family model.
3 - The Oppression of a Type
I shutter when I consider the amount of lives this false teaching of moral mongamy has claimed. The social implications over the course of the past few thousand of years is beyond my ability to comprehend. The church should have been teaching the allowance of polygyny. If it turns out that naturally speaking, some men are biologically wired to desire and seek "several" partners, and because of the moral teachings were thrown into a system of laws and expectations that condemned the natural outcomes of this (that is, more children) , than this brings and even heavier pain to the grander picture.
Think about it from another perspective. One of the arguments I hear all the time from moral monogamists is that strife and discord argument. They highlight the difficulties that a polygynyst lifestyle leads to, claiming scripture infers a type of superiority of monogyny in its "peacefulness". First, I would encourage these men to visit point number 4 and consider it carefully. Second, that logic leads to a natural "less than" condemnation of polygyny that essentially reduce its fruits to rubble. It is to condemn the physical offspring and thus this "by faith" spiritual offspring that arose from those non-condemned biblical lines.
Yet for some reason, in certain times and certain places, ignorance is allowed to reign. It baffles me, that so many "Christians" are so quick to condemn a practice that led to the twelve tribes of Israel. God is not mocked, and he cannot be made a fool. Tread carefully, and watch yourself, that you not brings coal of condemnation on your own head in your moral monogyny espousing.
4 - The Truth should be taught in the family
If you are a bible believing man, who knows deep down his is capable of loving multiple women, and believes that it is not biblically condemned, and you allow you wife to put you down and shut you up when it comes to standing up for the truth, you are a coward and a major contributor to the problem we now face as bible believing men. I would recommend abandoning your fear and at least help communicate to her the truth, even if you are going to remain monogamous, because by allowing your wife to "hate" and/or "condemn" in the pretense of your knowledge of the truth of God's word and the truth of your own heart perpetuates this problem. There is a war on biblical patriarchy and as a Christian man you are accountable to be the head of your household and lead in truth. If you do not stand and represent the truth the false ideologies will be able to reign and deceive our families and children. As hard as it is the move towards God's truth from our cultures egalitarian thinking, it is necessary in the larger socio-economic circumstance to provide the opportunities the bible intended to be provided.
If you are firmly convicted in your heart that you have your one woman, and want to commit to that and go with that, then I say it is beautiful! However, you must make sure that biblical truth is taught it your household in its entirety. You cannot, being biblically consistent, swing to a moral argumentation for monogamy to facilitate emotional ease with your wife. If you do argue its moral superiority or necessity, you create a comparison that was never intended to be created. You can't let your bible believing wife go around espousing the bible teaches moral monogamy. Can you not see the issues this creates for the Church as a whole and the establishment of God's true principles. You are laying the context for the foundations to be challenged, that is the very patriarchal authority of God himself. You are also helping to perpetuate a culture where women who would have otherwise had children and a husband might go without one.
Let the true meaning of "Marriage is honorable in all" be inspired within the Ecclesia.
Men, I don't know what to tell you, its all right there at your fingertips. His word, your responsibility and thus empowerment, we have been given all that we need. I know the battle is hard, I can understand why society as a whole has stayed away from this, and yet here it is. You must answer some fundamental questions for yourself about your faith, God's authority in your life, your own authority in your household, and desired outcomes of Godly family and biblical truth. Eventually a generation of men are going to have to be willing to stand up under the curse that these traditions and dogmas have brought on the biblical family, and lay a foundation worth standing on. I know the push back from society and some individuals in our lives is intimidating and scary, but I think socially many bible believing men are ready to stand and proclaim truth. I am honestly praying God does something about this, as I believe in his goodness, his grace, and his dominion. In the end his Law is perfect and his Love is triumphant.
