Flood and Rivers
From an earlier season · raw & unedited
A metaphor to describe my life at of this point would be a great body of water. I came into existence from something much greater than myself, and all that I have is dependent on that. Because I am young and my direction is still unclear I am like a flood. My ideas, dreams, ambitions, and hopes exist on a large and extensive plane much like a large flood, but sometimes I feel idle and as if I dont have direction or purpose. This body of water of who I am serves little purpose aside my ability to know and be known. In all actuality a flood can be a problem of sorts too, and Im sure we have all been a liability to someone before. A flood can drown humans, animals, plants, and can destroy great buildings. I know anyone that knows me knows that being my friend is not always the easiest thing. So, if you do get to know me be sure to bring some of those floatiesor a lifeguard ;)
A body of water has a surface, and it has a great depth. Underneath the surface of the water currents are raging and moving about. Life is being created and destroyed in these currents, and they regulate the body of water. But on the surface the water might be so calm that you could see your reflection in it. Just as I and the life of who I am and where I am going exist in my inner thoughts and currents, and yet the surface is all anyone in this room can physically see.
It has been engraved in me that a heart of faith, love, and service are keys to life, and yet in my current idle state I am limited to what I can do with these three. However, a great flood, a great body of water has much mass and much to give. As a flood is at the mercy of nature and the surrounding terrain, so I am at the mercy of who I am and where I have been put. Thus the great flood is molded by something greater than itself, and in this there is hope that the flood might one day become a river, which is focused, has direction, and can have passion and purpose.
A river, because of its stability and direction can serve many purposes. Its on its way to something greater than itself. It will surely fade away into a great body of water and eventually find its way to the greatest body of water, the ocean. On its course however a river can provide water to people in need, and quench their thirst. A river can provide a way of irrigation. A river can help provide power and can be a way to motivate trade and movement of peoples and goods. A river is a landmark and source of food. A river can divide a nation and unite a people. On its way to the greater ocean, a river obedient to the pull of gravity can even carve through mountains. A raging river is full of passion, and one can enjoy quite a thrill riding its powerful rapids.
I know now I am a great flood, a large body of water that is sitting idle, being filled to its maximum capacity so that it can begin its journey. I am seeking my passion, my purpose, and my direction. If I can become a river, I can serve others, help carve something in life that other people can join in on, help bring more goodness to the world, and the irony in all this is, all I have to do is surrender to the calling inside, call it gravity if you will, and in my fall I will serve a purpose as I head towards a much greater ocean that will be my demise, but that was also surely my beginning.
