Respect the Truth
What I need people that promote the message that a man dedicated to a single woman is morally superior to realize.
What I need the Christians to realize.
Please spend some more time in the old testament - it was deeply meaningful to Jesus and is foundational in understanding and interpreting the new testament correctly. You have an obligation to accept the whole truth ultimately. I realize we are heavily influenced by culture and learning is a gradual process, but respect the process and put in the work. Ask the hard questions and accept the hard conclusions.
What I need the Non-believers to realize.
I simply appeal to the principal of freedom of religion, or as I like to say, freedom of faith. Faith is tested by its outcomes, when a person commits an action in faith, whether evil or good, they are being a person. The hope is that we will come up with a common belief system as an educated people, and that would lead us to good and desirable outcomes for our species and planet. I believe in practicing my faith I am trying to express that these things are good and desirable and when practiced with love and respect will lead to good outcomes.
What might be the consequence for teaching morally required monogamy?
The bar for being a good man becomes fidelity in the present (one woman at a time, many in a lifetime, fidelity is the end of the game), as opposed to fidelity over a lifetime (true monogamy, virgin takes virginity forsaking all others). It also automatically persecutes a man wanting to be both poly and maintain fidelity, as he is an implied heretic.
This creates a false group - those that believe they are monogamist when actually the are a psudo-poly type.
It is not without irony that this group will probably be the strongest opponent of practiced and legal polygyny.
Increased economic burden and stress for pairs that could have otherwise come together in larger groups towards the common goal of family building.
Decreased reproduction.
And don't give me this garbage about the Earth being overpopulated. It is completely clear from a natural resource perspective that there is abundance, we as a species have just not figured out how to fully (and properly with sustainability in mind) utilize it.
Persecution of other groups as we rely on our "standard" for affirmation of our goodness.
Is anyone going to argue this doesn't happen? So much of the moral baggage we hold onto is because we have some type of idol we are holding on the inside to affirm our goodness. News flash! Your not good, you are seen and accepted as good because of the Goodness of Yahweh and the covering of his grace.
Stop looking for the wrong in others! Stop looking for sin! Look for Jesus instead and when sin does show itself it'll be nipping at your heels not looming in your head. Keep it where it belongs - subjected.
